For a long time, my approach to hosting a business website was pretty simple: choose a CMS that came closest to what I needed, then customize it until it did the job. For years, that was enough.
Over the past couple of years, though, I’ve started running into needs that a typical shared hosting plan doesn’t always handle well—or at least doesn’t give me the control I want. Being able to choose and manage the PHP version is one example. Once I needed more flexibility, I started moving whole business sites onto VPSs.
That gave me a lot more control, but it also meant taking on the setup and maintenance myself. If something goes wrong on the server, there’s no hosting support team to point at first. I have to figure out what happened and own the fix. Some of that work can be repetitive, but I don’t really see it as a chore. I enjoy building and designing things. The idea of taking a website from a blank page to something useful is exciting to me—as long as the project makes sense and has a clear goal.
I started building websites back in the late ’90s, so this progression feels pretty natural to me. I’ve had a lot of time to get comfortable with the technical side. But I know not everyone wants to spend their evenings adjusting server settings or sorting through hosting plans.
How do you handle your business website? Do you manage it yourself, use a hosted platform, hire someone, or skip having a site altogether? And if you know you need a website but aren’t sure what to choose, what part feels most confusing? I’ve helped people untangle hosting and account setups after they bought something that didn’t fit their needs, so I’m curious what others are running into.
