Understanding Margins and Markups

Margin vs. Markup: The Crucial Difference

While profit margin and markup both measure profitability, they use different baselines. Profit Margin calculates profit as a percentage of your selling price (revenue). Markup calculates profit as a percentage of your cost. A 50% markup on a $100 product means you sell it for $150, but your profit margin is only 33.3%.

Why Profit Margin Can Never Exceed 100%

Because margin is calculated as (Profit / Revenue), and profit cannot be greater than revenue when costs are non-negative, profit margin mathematically maxes out at 100% (when cost is $0.00). Markup, on the other hand, can easily exceed 100%, 500%, or even 1,000% on high-value products.
